Mexican Mayor killed after one day in office

A day after the new Temixco mayor was sworn into office, she was killed in her own home.

Gisela Mota Ocampo was with her family on the morning of January 2nd when a group of gunmen ambushed her house. She was shot in her doorway and the suspects were then pursued by police. There was a shootout, killing two of the suspects. The police then arrested two adults and a juvenile who will face prosecution. The suspects have ties to criminal organizations and drug cartels.

This is not the first time cartels have killed politicians. The cartels have been challenging the government for years, killing a multitude of politicians, especially mayors. The decade-long drug war seems to have evolved into a war for power of Mexico. Instead of focusing on the drug and oil business, they now have been taking advantage of the corruption within the government and forcing mayors to do their deeds and working through them. This gives cartels and underlying power in the government, making the drug war even more difficult to fight.
