Obama’s big little changes

Obama gave his last State of the Union address at the beginning of the month and shed tears  as he recounted the mass killings that took place during his presidency. Obama has said in multiple statements that gun control will be his main priority during his final year in office. He has bypassed congress to enact his new policies as soon as possible. Obama plans to increase the FBI staffing by 50% to conduct more efficient and thorough background checks in addition to upgrading their technology from paper to computer systems. He has also made it required for gun dealers to have a license and perform background checks. Now, internet sellers and gun showcase dealers cannot sell guns as they did before without facing federal prosecution and a quarter  of a million dollars in fines. Obama also plans to put $500 million towards mental health services. These changes will not dramatically increase mass shooting incidents, but will further prevent high powered weapons falling into the hands of the wrong individuals. However, these changes may be made in vain. Many republican candidates have stated that if elected, they would reverse these changes. Time can only tell if the new policies could make a difference in America’s gun control crisis.
