Barbie’s evolution

Barbie’s evolution

Barbie has had an iconic image for the past 57 years. Barbie dolls are often depicted as tall, blonde, and very skinny. For decades, moms have been concerned of how Barbie’s unrealistic body would affect how young girls perceived beauty. Mattel Inc. may have fixed that by releasing a new line of diverse barbie dolls. They come in seven skin tones, 22 eye colors, 24 hairstyles, all with a petite, curvy and tall options. According to a Buzzfeed experiment when a group of kids were given the new Barbie dolls, many of the girl participants responded positively. They said that they looked more like them and therefore enjoyed them more. Many of the boy participants said that the curvy dolls looked fat, supporting what many moms feared. Mattel hopes to save Barbie’s declining popularity with the new line of dolls, hoping that girls will find one that speaks to them.
