Artists to watch out for in 2016
As the end of 2015 approaches, so does another big year in music. New artists such as Silento, Fetty Wap, Jess Glynne and Natalie La Rose got their first tastes of the Billboard top charts. Albums such as Taylor Swift’s “1989”, Drake’s “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late”, Ed Sheeran’s “X” and The Weeknd’s “Beauty Behind The Madness” set records in the music industry.
Presumably, 2016 is to be yet another revolutionary year in music for both old and new artists. In 2015, many new artists found success, both small and big. These are ten artists who got their first taste of success this year and are most likely stay around well into 2016 and for many years to come.
- Leon Bridges
Chances are if you’ve watched television recently, you’ve gotten a taste of Bridges’ most successful song “Coming Home” in a number of commercials. The Georgia-born gospel singer Leon Bridges released his first album in June of this year. “Coming Home” peaked at sixth on the Billboard charts and his music is being used in a number of entertainment projects. With Bridges just beginning to resurrect gospel to the general public, he definitely will not be disappearing any time soon.
- Pia Mia
Until recently, Guam singer Pia Mia was most widely known for her association with the Kardashian family, most notably her close friendship with Kylie Jenner. With her music career taking off, she made a name for herself in 2015. Earlier this year she collaborated with Chris Brown and Tyga and released her hit single “Do It Again”, hitting UK Top40 charts in August of this year. Her most recent single, “Touch”, is the second single she’s released that is to be included on her debut album. The album’s release date has yet to be announced, but is projected to be a major success next year.
- Alessia Cara
Nineteen year old Canadian singer Alessia Cara got her big break with her first release. In April, her single “Here” took the world by storm. The song, an anthem for people who secretly hate parties made its way into the Billboard Top 20 charts. Following the release of “Here” came her wildly successful EP “Four Pink Walls” took over iTunes in September. Her debut album is to be released on November 13 of this year. The predicted success of the album, titled “Know-It-All”, is to be the beginning of a successful career.
- Years & Years
British electronica trio Years & Years released its only album, “Communion”, in early July of this year. The album hit number one in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, and Scotland. The album won multiple awards, including an MTV music award. It’s most notable singles, “King”, “Shine” and “Eyes Shut” all hit number one in multiple European countries. No new music is currently in the works, but many critics believe this is only the beginning for the unique trio.
- Hailee Steinfeld
After her part in Pitch Perfect 2, her participation in Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video, and the release of her first single “Love Myself”, Hailee Steinfeld entered the entertainment industry with a bang. “Love Myself” found itself on the Billboard charts for six consecutive weeks and on radio stations everywhere. She also has the Pitch 2 song “Flashlight”. Currently, Steinfeld is recording songs for her debut album and is scheduled to participate in four box office films. The eighteen-year-old’s career is projected to soar for many years to come.
- Troye Sivan
South African- born YouTuber, actor, singer and songwriter Troye Sivan is widely known in his home country of Australia, but just recently gained footing in the U.S. His unique electro-pop sound and heart-felt lyrics set him apart from many mainstream artists. In 2014 his first popular EP “TRYXE” hit number one in over 60 countries across the globe, including the United States. His 2015 EP release “WILD” made top charts in Australia and ranked high in the U.S. as well. In December, Sivan is to release his first extended LP “Blue Neighbourhood”, projected to carry out life well into 2016.
- Bea Miller
Discovered on X Factor in 2012, American songwriter and actress Bea Miller’s sharp-edged pop songs got quite a bit of love this year. Her album “Not an Apology” peaked at seventh in U.S. chart positions. Her most popular song, “Fire N Gold”, was hot on the Billboard Hot 100 soon after its release in April. Miller has a strong fanbase after her involvement in X Factor and her blunt, and brutally honest song lyrics Although she’s recorded many songs since then, no album has been announced, as her current focus is working to deepen her connection with her fans before releasing more music.
- Jidenna
After his single “Classic Man” dominated Billboard charts for 16 consecutive weeks, nobody could ignore Nigerian-American businessman and recording artist Jidenna. His other single “Yoga” with Janelle Monáe made up part of the latest Wondaland Records Presentation. Later this year, Wondaland’s compilation EP “The Eephus” peaked at fifth on the Billboard 200 charts. Currently there are rumors of a new album. It’s name is yet to be released, but is said to include multiple well-known rappers.
- Kwabs
British singer Kwabena Adjepong, or “Kwabs”, got international attention this year with his single “Walk”. Although it was released in September 2014, the song was resurrected earlier this year and has been on the Billboard Hot 100 charts for 50 consecutive weeks, peaking at first on several international charts. The R&B hit later recieved a twist with a version featuring Fetty Wap. He continues to collaborate with other artists, his latest being Disclosure. Kwabs is projected to have a big year as his debut album “Love + War” gains recognition and his latest “Walk” EP continues to creep its way onto charts.
- Pentatonix
This Texan quintet got the spotlight for the first time in 2015. The a cappella group recreates popular hits, most noted for their remakes of Ed Sheeran’s “Sing”, Justin Beiber’s and Jack Ü’s “Where Are Ü Now” and Major Lazer’s “Lean On”. Their most popular original song, “Can’t Sleep On Love”, remained on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for five weeks. They had much success on their Christmas albums as well. With Pentatonix constantly remaking the latest hits, their voices will not fade from the industry anytime soon.
