The average teen spends 6-9 hours on media, study says

Common Sense Media is a nonprofit organization that works to bring awareness to the trouble media can happen to bring. A recent study has been held that discusses the amount of time teenagers spend their day staring at the bright screens on their phones, laptops and more. The numbers shocked many as the results were drastic, proving that the average teenager spends about six plus hours out of their day on electronics.

Based on a sample of 2,600; younger kids from age 8-12 tend to spend far less time online, totaling about 6 hours. Meanwhile older teens, 12-18, reached up to nine. The numbers don’t include time spent in school or on homework either. In fact around half of the kids have admitted to using their phones and other technologies while doing their homework. Although a large percentage of the teens do not believe it affects their learning, many studies have proved otherwise.

“It just shows you that these kids live in this massive 24/7 digital media technology world, and it’s shaping every aspect of their life. They spend far more time with media technology than any other thing in their life.” Said James Steyer, the chief executive and founder of Common Sense Media.

Teens have their own opinions when it comes to their use of devices, mainly dependent on gender. 62% of young boys prefer to play video games, while only 20% of girls enjoy games the most. Yet when it comes to girls, 44% would consider social media their favorite activity versus 29% of boys.

Although those numbers shrink drastically as only 10% of kids studied chose social media as their preferred activity online. It turns out TV and music comes in first as the most popular use for media among kids of all ages.

Common Sense Media is currently working on their very next project, which covers addiction when it comes to and media use.
