A hoppin’ time at the International House of Pancakes

Serving more than 700 million pancakes a year, the International House of Pancakes better known as ihop is the third biggest family-style dining chain. So what is the big deal about this restaurant? I went on a mission to find out. When sampling the three different pancake dishes, there were two main things to consider; taste and presentation.

The first plate I sampled were the Red Velvet Pancakes. There were two perfectly stacked red pancakes topped with cream cheese frosting, powdered sugar and whipped cream. Everything was aligned and matched the picture online. The taste however, did not live up to the display of the pancakes. They tasted exactly like red velvet but all the sweet toppings drowned out the flavor.

The second plate I tasted were the Double Blueberry Pancakes. The appearance of the dish was a huge disappointment. It looked like a purple mess of vomit. The extra blueberries on top blended together with the melted whipped cream and created an absolute monstrosity. It made me not want to eat the pancakes at all. After closing my eyes and forcing myself to try the food in front of me, the taste was very mediocre.

The last dish I sampled were the Original Buttermilk Pancakes. The overall look of the serving was pleasant. The pancakes were nicely centered in the middle of the plate with a scoop of butter on top. The only thing that could be improved were the shape of the pancakes. The taste was like any other regular pancake you could buy from anywhere. Nothing impressive but nothing horrible.

In conclusion, the pancakes were enjoyable to eat but the title International House of Pancakes does not live up to its expectation.
