Split Movie Review

Newly released on January 20th 2017, Split is already taking the world by storm rating number one in the box office ratings. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, the movie follows a man named Kevin Wendell Crumb who has 23 different personalities. While embodying the personality “Dennis”, he decides to kidnap the three protagonists Claire, Marcia and Casey. While switching through all 23 of his personalities, some of them try to warm the girls that a new 24th personality called “The Beast”, will come and kill them.

With lots of jumpscares and disturbing scenes, the movie is truly terrifying. It brings mental illness into a new light and produces paranoid thoughts of who could have illnesses such as the main character Kevin.

James McAvoy, who has starred in movies such as X-Men: Apocalypse, Atonement, Filth and most recently Split, did an amazing job portraying a character with a severe mental illness. Throughout the transitions between all the 24 different personalities, it was very clear to see the differences between each of Kevin’s identities. McAvoy completely embodied each of the different characters and changed everything about him; from posture, voice and even look in his eye. It was the ultimate acting challenge and McAvoy definitely stepped up and exceeded everyone’s expectations.

Overall the movie was terrifying besides the frustration that was caused by the three protagonists; Clare, Marcia and Casey. It was aggravating to watch the characters struggle to get out of situations that require common sense. It was very hard to relate to the girls because of their blant stupidity.
