Bloodborne Review
Oh boy, another mind-shattering hard game from the team that made the infamous Dark Souls series, and it’s called Bloodborne. In this new game you play as an adventurer traveling into the city of Yharnam, which is rumored to be the home of a powerful medicine that can heal all illnesses. Upon arrival into the city, however, you discover the city has been assaulted by a plague that transforms much of the city’s people into ferocious beasts. Your eventual quest is to hunt down monsters around the city of Yharnam so that you may obtain the mythical cure you came for in the first place.
The game has an interesting gothic feel, with a dark color palette and creepy surroundings. The entire world seems desolate and filled only with a sparse few survivors hiding from the malformed beasts. Following game director Hidetaka Miyazaki’s trend, Bloodborne has multiple similarities in its gameplay as its infamous predecessors.
Your character is fast and agile, which helps in the quick offensive playing style the game requires. The weapons in the game are pretty fun too; you have a melee weapon that has two different states, allowing for two different types of fighting, and a gun, which can stun enemies. Again, similar to Dark Souls, enemies drop a special item that serves as experience points, which are lowered when you die.
Multiplayer ties into the game nicely, allowing you to summon other players to help you with bosses or large waves of enemies. The downside to this is you can be invaded, which is where another person comes to your game and attempts to destroy you, also similar to Dark Souls.
Bloodborne seems less of a rage-inducing challenge like Dark Souls was. It has a wonderfully dark atmosphere with eerie visuals and sounds. Mixed with the weird array of characters you meet and the interesting lore, there are only a few problems to the game. These belong not necessarily to the game itself, but with how Bloodborne compares to Dark Souls. Some say it is not as complex or challenging as Dark Souls, which makes it less fun. But even still, Bloodborne is a wonderful game for new fans or fans of Dark Souls.
