Mario’s 30th anniversary game

When you think of original gaming, it’s more than likely you think of the Mario franchise. The iconic Nintendo mascot has been a staple of the gaming community since its humble beginnings.

At E3 2015, Nintendo announced the release of a game commemorating Mario’s 30th anniversary called the “Super Mario Maker”, for the Wii U. The game is a custom level creator, allowing fans to design and share unique and original Mario levels. Using items and designs from four different Mario games (“Super Mario Bros”, “Super Mario Bros 3”, “Super Mario World” and “New Super Mario Bros U”), you can mix and match to create a unique Mario experience. You can make your own levels or play ones made by other fans from all across the world.

“It’s a celebration that folds three decades of Mario into one accessible, powerful creation suite,” said Jose Otero, a game reviewer on IGN.com.

Every day you play for the first nine days, you unlock new items to build with. This system keeps you coming back and experimenting, so the more and more you unlock, the better you are at creating.

With the assistance of a special new celebratory Amiibo (special figurines compatible with the Wii U that unlock different content for different games) designed in the image of the original Mario, you can add a Big Mushroom to make your character huge or use other character’s Amiibos to unlock a Mystery Mushroom that turns Mario into other Nintendo characters, depending of the figure.

And if you aren’t in the mood for designing or just browsing the lists to find the best levels, you can play the 10-Mario and 100-Mario Challenges. 10-Mario Challenge gives you 10 lives to complete eight random sample stages, or play the 100-Mario Challenge which gives you 100 lives to beat a set number of user created courses selected randomly from the Internet. Beating the 100-Mario Challenge will allow you to use the Mystery Mushroom for some Nintendo characters who don’t have an amiibo of their own. All in all, Super Mario Maker is a limitless sandbox of creation, allowing easy access to unlimited Mario that is fresh and new with every mind. “The princess is in another castle” indeed, because with this game, there will always be a new Mario adventure right around the corner.

“For the first time in a creation-focused experience, I look forward to returning again and again for more than just the amazing levels I know other people will create,” said Justin Haywald, a gamer reviewer for Gamespot.com. “I want to keep making my own levels better. The game won’t necessarily turn you into the next Shigeru Miyamoto, but you can almost feel a little bit of that magic rubbing off every time you upload a new creation.”
