“A Monster Calls”: how do you stand up to your giants

A Monster Calls is a movie about Connor, a young boy whose mother is very sick. Though Conor knows of his mother’s sickness, Connor tries to ignore the seriousness of it all. Conor’s grandmother is continuously coming to the house to try to help his mother, meanwhile she tries to convince connor to come live her. One night after watching a movie with his mom conor heads upstairs and begins to draw. Then as the clock struck 12:07 the house began to shake and and large giant appeared and told connor that he would tell him four stories and when the fourth story came connor would tell the giant his truth. This confused Connor very much, as the monster went on to tell a story every night and with each story came a moral behind the story, connor couldn’t figure out how the stories applied to him.

Connor’s mom was rushed to the hospital where she received treatment for her cancer. As time went on connor’s mom’s health got worse and connor began to blame the monster, under the impression that the monster was there to help his mother, not him. When it was time for the fourth story, connor’s mom found out that none of the treatment was not working. Immediately conor ran to the monster looking for an explanation as to why his mother still sick. Instead of answering the giant continuously asked connor to tell him his truth. Connor was still confused wouldn’t answer. Consumed with anger and confusion. Then connor came to realize that his truth was him letting go of his mother, him realizing that his mother dying and that nothing could stop that. Later on that night his mother died and though it was upsetting, connor was able to accept his mother’s death.
