Sneakers: more than just a pair of shoes

You may see a pair of shoes and not think much of them. Lots of people have the same reaction, or a lack thereof. But what if I told you that millions of people are willing to wait in lines for hours on end, spend hundreds of dollars, and travel across the nation, all for a pair of kicks?

“Feels great, I love shoes bro,” Zander Katsirebas said when asked about others’ reaction toward his shoe collection.

This basically sums up how tons of “sneakerheads” across the country feel. It would seem that it is a love more than it is a passion. Just ask Michael Jordan about America’s desire to own his products.

In 2015, Nike’s “Air Jordan” branch accounted for $3 billion in total sales in the United States alone. Air Jordan had a 64% share of the basketball shoe market as of 2015, which is over 28 times that of Adidas. Fun fact – at the beginning of 2016, Michael Jordan was projected to out earn any other athlete (active or retired) by over $30 million.

“About $200,” Katsirebas said when asked about how much he spends on a pair of shoes.

While this is expensive compared to your average pair of white canvas sneakers, it’s not much in the realm of basketball shoes. Many pairs of retro Air Jordans sell for thousands of dollars a pair. However, it isn’t just those exclusive retro “J’s”.

Recently, Kanye West’s signature shoe with Adidas, called Yeezys, have taken the hip-hop fashion world by storm. Contrary to other celebrities with lines of shoes, West designs the shoes himself. A great marketer, West has created a massive following for his music and shoes. Release dates for his signature kicks are highly anticipated by shoe lovers, so much so that new releases often sell out just seconds after going on sale. A new pair of Yeezy Boost 350s sell for anywhere from $750 to well over $4,000.

“Yeezus Christ, those are expensive,” Nathan Edwards said about the price of Kanye West’s shoes.

Many people feel that Air Jordans and Yeezys are overrated and overpriced, considering that their owners often only wear them for a short period of time and/or leave them in the box in an effort to keep them in mint condition. But this doesn’t stop the hundreds of thousands of fanatics who hunt down the high priced sneakers.
