Gyrocopter lands on Capitol lawn

On April 15, Douglas Mark Hughes flew a one-man gyrocopter for over one hour from Maryland to Washington DC, through the no-fly zone above the city, to land on the lawn of the Capitol building. His goal: to deliver angry letters for every member of Congress urging them to reform campaign finance laws. Hughes has been a rural mailman from Florida for twelve years. He had apparently been planning to send a message to Congress for nearly two and a half years, thinking of every scenario and how he could send the biggest message.

“He told us that he felt like his son did something stupid, but he had made a point. He learned a lesson out of that. And it was, if you want to make a point, you’ve got to do something big, as sad as that seems,” said Ben Montgomery, the Tampa Bay Times reporter who broke the story of the gyrocopter flight according to CNN.

Hughes flew his homemade gyrocopter to Congress to make a statement about his political views. Hughes is upset that politicians can be “bought and sold” and announced his mission online before taking flight. The website his message was featured on was one he made himself, called TheDemocracyClub.org. According to the website, Hughes even sent an email to [email protected] attempting to persuade government officials to not shoot him down on his approach. Hughes’ radical ideologies gave him only the intentions to cause a big shockwave to expose what he believes to be corruption in places of our government.

“Any real examination of corruption in Washington will lead to an examination of campaign finance — and reform will threaten the orgy of unlimited campaign cash…” wrote Hughes on his website TheDemocracyClub.org, according to USATODAY.com.
