Tumblr: the internets black hole

Many people know of the social media website, Tumblr. It has over 50 million users, and references to this page are appearing seemingly everywhere nowadays. But what is it? And why are teenagers spending so much time on this website?

“Tumblr is basically Facebook’s little alternative brother,” said freshman Jasmine Robinson. “It’s more for teenagers and young adults than any other age group, and it’s a way to share opinions on any interests.”

People create blogs to post what they find interesting to them, which is why this social media has such a diverse collection of people and ideas. There are blogs about feminist movements, protests, petitions and many other types of informative works on Tumblr, and people can follow accounts to get constant streams of news and information delivered right in front of them.

“It’s where millions connect over what they like,” said freshman Erin Hoover. “Everything is on Tumblr, and that’s most likely the reason why it’s liked so much.”

Teenagers play a major role in this website’s popularity. They create personalized blogs and follow accounts that they can relate to, creating communities and forming friendships with people who otherwise wouldn’t know they existed. Artwork is shared, music is passed on, and fanfictions are read by the countless numbers who gather on Tumblr.

“I don’t know why I spend so much time on Tumblr. I guess it just interests me,” said Charlie Cruz, a freshman. “I get updates on my favorite bands and stuff, so that’s cool.”
