Give me a break

Give me a break

A little over a week ago, the students of Desert Vista resumed their weekday routines as their week long spring break came to an end. Every nine weeks, the students earn their quarterly break and these well deserved breaks all last for different amounts of time, ranging from one week to three months. Coming back to school after break can be tough, especially if there is only one week to unwind. Speaking on behalf of Desert Vista’s students, we can come to the conclusion that an additional week of fall and spring break would be beneficial to both students and staff.

“I agree that both fall and spring break should each be two weeks long.”  said freshman Sonia Dias. “Having an extra week of break would allow for more time for students to relax and do more stuff.”

Out of all the breaks we get in one school year, summer break is the longest, lasting for about three months. Near the end of summer break, students are almost relieved that school is restarting because it can get tedious and boring. Taking two weeks out of summer break and distributing them to fall and spring break to make them each last two weeks would be favorable to students and staff.

Usually over breaks, teachers assign reading homework and make students prepare for upcoming tests, even though the quarterly breaks are meant to be time off from school. It’s understandable to fit in material that there isn’t time for into the school year during breaks, but dedicating a few days of the already short break for school work is ridiculous. If given two weeks of fall and spring break, then having a few days of school work would be acceptable because students will have extra time for themselves. The two weeks deducted from summer break would barely make a difference.
