Billboard Hot 100: Top Ten of the Week

The Billboard Hot 100 is a collection of the 100 most popular songs of the week based on radio play, streaming, sales, etc. This is a list of the top ten songs for the week of Nov. 28, 2016. and more information about both the songs and the artists behind them.

  1. “Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd feat. Gucci Mane

           “Black Beatles” has swept the nation over the past few weeks as the background song to a national trend the Mannequin Challenge, the track by hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd has been on the Billboard Hot 100 for 11 weeks now, and has held the top position for a portion of those.

2.“Closer” by The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey

           The Chainsmokers are an EDM (electronic dance music) group consisting of two friends Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall. The group has had songs play on mainstream radio and streaming outlets before, including “#Selfie” which reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, none have been a bigger hit than “Closer”. It has been on the chart for 17 weeks now, and the top position of one of the year’s biggest songs was number one.

3.“Starboy” by The Weeknd

           Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, more commonly known as The Weeknd, was considered the breakout artist of 2015 and has continued his success through 2016. The Canadian-born Alternative R&B artist released the full version of his latest album, “Starboy”, on Nov. 25, 2016 and it has gained nothing but praise since. The Weeknd’s current chart-topper has been on the Billboard Hot 100 for ten weeks now and had a peak position of number two. Another track off his Starboy album, is Party Monster, and gaining ground in the top 100, currently listed as the “Hot Shot Debut” of the list.

4.“24k Magic” by Bruno Mars

          Bruno Mars, an international superstar. Mars has sold over 169 million singles in his career, won four Grammys and been nominated for 13 others as either an artist or producer, as well as performed at two Super Bowl halftime shows. A well known pop icon, this is his 14th song on the Billboard Hot 100, and seventh in the top 5. “24k Magic” was the first song released off his “24k Magic” album.

5.“Juju On That Beat (TZ Anthem)” by Zay Hilfigerrr & Zayion McCall

          Another song in the line of tracks referencing popular dances, “Juju On That Beat”. When it first gained popularity, it captured dance crazes that were sweeping the nation at the time (hit the folks and the running man). This is Hilfigerrr and McCall’s first song on the Billboard Hot 100, but has received unimagined praise since it was released. “Juju On That Beat” has been on the chart for ten weeks, and reached a top spot of five.

6.“Side to Side” by Ariana Grande feat. Nicki Minaj

           Ariana Grande, a former actress on the popular tv show Victorious, has a massive following worldwide. Selling millions between a combination of albums and singles, Grande is a superstar. With 17 of her songs making it onto the Billboard Hot 100, she is known by practically anyone who listens to music. Her top hit, Problem feat. Iggy Azalea, reached number one in summer of 2014. “Side to Side” features Nicki Minaj, a superstar in her own right, and has been on the chart for 13 weeks; the track’s highest position is where it is currently sitting at number five.

7.“Heathens” by Twenty One Pilots

          A group made up of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun (although there were four members in the past), Twenty One Pilots has taken over the alternative music industry. With edgy vocals and creative lyrics, the band has surpassed the 1,000,000 mark for albums sold. “Heathens” is a song created for the soundtrack of “Suicide Squad”, a DC superhero blockbuster. “Heathens” has been on the chart now for 23 weeks and number two was the track’s top position on the chart.

8.“Let Me Love You” by DJ Snake feat. Justin Bieber

           Let Me Love You is the second ranked EDM track listed here. DJ Snake paired with Canadian-Born, global superstar Justin Bieber  to create this hit. Neither are strangers to the Hot 100, as they have both previously had songs ranked in the top five of the chart. The top position of “Let Me Love You” was four, and it has been on the chart for 17 weeks.

9.“Broccoli” by D.R.A.M. feat. Lil Yachty

           A breakout hit, “Broccoli” took over the hip-hop charts in mid 2016.  After being on the Hot 100 for 25 weeks, it is still in the top ten after being ranked at the five spot previously. “Broccoli” is a song that has practically been played seemingly everywhere from school dances to pool parties to mainstream radio. This is the first time for both D.R.A.M. and Lil Yachty on the Hot 100, but likely not there last.

10.“Don’t Wanna Know” by Maroon 5 feat. Kendrick Lamar

           Finally, we have number 10, Maroon 5 feat. Kendrick Lamar.  Although the group probably needs no introduction, here’s one anyway. The winners of three Grammys and nominees of ten others, owners of multiple platinum albums, and international pop-rock icons, Maroon 5 is familiar with the spotlight as well as the Hot 100. When you add in Kendrick Lamar, who is also a hip-hop chart topper, it is almost inevitable to come out with a smash hit. The track has been on the chart for eight weeks, and the eight spot is currently its highest ranking.
