Courses Offered

There are several communications related courses offered at DVHS. The introductory courses are Beginning TV, Journalism and Design Productions.  Each of the Journalism courses actually counts as a vocational education credit you need toward graduation. Moving forward in the sequence to 3-4 level courses, students will receive a Practical Art credit. Newspaper Production, Yearbook Production, TV Production are offered. You can read about each of the courses below.

 

TV Production  / Credit: 1 credit Vocational Arts or Elective. Prerequisite: none, but signature and or Teacher Recommendation required.  The perfect candidate is energetic, upbeat and possesses the ability to work well with others. The ability to write and read well is a must and they should be comfortable speaking in front of a large audience.

DVTV staff members soon learn to organize information and manage themselves and their time wisely.

All students, not just the anchors, are expected to come to class appropriately groomed and ready to be on-air if called upon. Prior experience in TV broadcasting, editing, camerawork or acting are helpful but definitely not necessary. After all, it is a class and they are all students hoping to learn the ins and outs of television broadcasting. Once a student has been accepted into the program they are taught how to deal professionally with all the pressures and challenges of producing a live, daily, news show.

 

Journalism / Newspaper Production  / Credit: 1 credit Vocational Arts or Elective. Prerequisite: none, but signature and or Teacher Recommendation required.  The student will explore all aspects of newspaper, magazines and yearbooks and/or broadcast and emergent media while they write, interview edit, design and apply media law and ethics. Students will explore all aspects of visual journalism using digital video cameras and computers. Topics covered will include visual composition, operation of equipment, computer-editing programs. Assignments will be geared toward publication in one of the school publications. This class will be responsible for the production of the school newspaper. Students will be trained and work in the following areas: writing, photography, design, business and emerging media.

 

Yearbook Production Credit: 1 unit of Practical Art or Elective Credit Prerequisite:

Prerequisite: none, but signature and or Teacher Recommendation required. This class will be responsible for the production of the school yearbook. Students will be trained and work in the following areas: writing, photography, design, business and emerging media. Students in this course record the events of the school year for publication in Storm, our school’s yearbook. Students will get hands-on experience in the areas of desktop publishing, photography, writing and the business aspects of yearbook production. Successful students in this course will be able to work with others in a diverse environment. This year’s staff is making DVHS history by publishing the school’s all-color yearbook.
