What is Coachella?

In 1999 a music and arts festival was born in Indio, California. That festival would later be named “Coachella.”

During the first couple years, the festival was being held in early October, where weather would be nicer, but the date was later changed to late April to celebrate spring and the beginning of summer.

College student and Coachella enthusiast Scarlett Montgomery said, “Coachella is really a place where people connect. There is something for everyone, if it’s music or art; everyone who enjoys the art should experience it at least once in their lives.”

Coachella brings a variety of celebrities to the city as well, including Vanessa Hudgens, Evan Peters with Emma Roberts, and Kendall and Kylie Jenner.

“It’s kind of great to see so many celebrities in one place at once,” Montgomery said. “People don’t usually bother them, which is pretty cool for them.”

One of the main staples of the whole festival is the fashion on display there, where flower crowns and hippie-inspired clothing is the key to success. The clothes vary from person to person, but many girls tend to paint their faces and bodies with different patterns of dots and designs of white paint.

“I’ve gone to Coachella for five years now, and the fashion does change a bit, but it’s the same vibe overall,” Montgomery says. “It’s a very Woodstock feel, a lot of hipsters, lots of music, and way too much drugs.”

There’s a lot of truth to the last statement above: Coachella is specifically known for people passing around drugs like marijuana and LSD out in the open right before big concerts, and the bodies of water near the land become more contaminated near the time of the festival, supposedly because of drugs deposited in the water.

“I sadly can’t go this year. School is getting pretty intense, but the setlist looks absolutely amazing!” Montgomery said. “All the artists look so great this year!”

The highlights of this year’s festival include AC/DC, Jack White, Drake, Tame Impala and Marina and The Diamonds.

“Coachella is a place where you can surround yourself with people who like the same music you do,” Montgomery said. “You’re around people who want to be there as much as you do. It’s such a memorable thing to be able to experience.”
