“The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water”

“The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water”

Spongebob Squarepants has been one of the biggest shows on Nickelodeon and has been running since 1999. The show got so popular it received a movie in 2004, and it was loved by fans of all ages. After the release of the movie, the show began to fall apart, and as the years went by, the episodes became more bland and less entertaining than the pre-movie episodes. In 2014, the second Spongebob movie was announced and was released in 2015.

Fans were surprised to see a second Spongebob movie after the show’s decay, and were very anxious to see what the writers could do with another movie. Fans had mixed emotions about the movie, but personally I believe this was a great improvement from the television series.

The plot of the movie starts like any other Spongebob episode: Plankton, the main antagonist of the series, is trying to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula, but a pirate, the main antagonist of the movie, steals it before Plankton can. The whole town goes apocalyptic because there are no more Krabby Patties, and Spongebob and the other main characters must go to the surface to get the formula back.

I think this was a good idea for a Spongebob plot and can be taken into creative paths. It puts the focus on a new antagonist and the main characters in a new environment (out of water), which the show has rarely done. This also creates some comedic ideas for how the main characters react to humans. With such great opportunity with this setup, somehow the writers could not execute it.

Although the movie had a decent storyline, the story itself had weird turns in direction and was stretched out more than it should have been. The big idea with the film is that Spongebob and his friends are in the real world with humans, but it takes 75 percent of the movie for them to even go to the surface. The comedy and story was good during the underwater part, but some parts felt really stretched and unnecessary.

The surface part of the movie is the less enjoyable part of the film. I guess the whole point of this part was to throw in some out-of-water jokes and slapstick, and to have the battle with the pirate. And that’s kind of what it was, slapstick and a battle. This plot began to lose taste, and there was no extra story until the climax. Although the battle scene with the pirate was pretty good, everything else was just cheap slapstick.

Overall, this movie was okay. It brought back some of the old Spongebob quality, but shed some light on current Spongebob faults. It was good to see some entertaining comedy in the majority of the film like old episodes, but it was unfortunate to see a falling plot and slapstick like most modern episodes. Mainly, I was glad to see the writers make something better than what they would normally produce. Maybe this movie is a new step for Spongebob, possibly a sign that the show could become better.
