Everything you need to know about Jay Z’s ‘Tidal’

On March 30th, Tidal became an official music streaming service, and for $20 a month, Tidal provides high-quality music, along with exclusive videos, music and more. Although there has been debate on whether or not the service is worth it, this is everything you should know about Tidal.

  1. Its Origin

Tidal was first a streaming service that started in Scandinavia in 2009, the original name was WiMP, and had over 500,000 users at the end of 2014. Just last month Jay Z purchased the company for $56M, and got big name stars like Rihanna and Madonna to join in and support the new service that promises to pay artists more for having their music streamed.

  1. Famous Names Involved.

All owners of the company are fellow musicians, including Arcade Fire, Beyoncé, Calvin Harris, Coldplay, Daft Punk, Deadmau5, Jack White, Jason Aldean, J Cole, Kanye West, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Usher. All of the artists attended the company’s press conference, all stating the Tidal was “the first artist-owned global music and entertainment platform.”

  1. How will Tidal compete with Spotify and Youtube?

Both Youtube and Spotify offer a streaming service that, for a payment each month, allows you to listen to unlimited, high-quality music. While Spotify and Youtube are two of the biggest services today, Tidal is expected to do tremendously well in the next year, based solely on all the big names involved in the company.
