Nurse’s Ebola Lawsuit

Texas nurse Nina Pham recently sued Texas Health Resources after being the first American on U.S. soil to contract Ebola.

Pham claims that she was not properly prepared to handle caring for a patient with Ebola. Her patient, Liberian native Thomas Eric Duncan, died from the disease.

Some of Pham’s allegations include:

  • THR (Texas Health Resources) announced to the public that Pham was in good condition; however, behind closed doors, health workers were having an end-of-life discussion with her while noting she was too impaired to make the decisions on her own.
  • Her mother was told that she was in good condition, only to find out directly from Pham that she wasn’t.
  • Pham never gave permission for videos of her to be sent out to the media.
  • She didn’t want the public to know her name when she was sick.
  • She and her colleague, who also contracted the virus, received only “Googled” Ebola information from their bosses.

THR claims that they followed all policies and laws for Pham’s safety and privacy and added, “As distressing as the lawsuit is to us, we remain optimistic that we can resolve this matter with Nina.”

Nina says that while she did beat the disease she still has a long way to go as far as recovery goes.

“I was hoping that THR would be more open and honest about everything that happened at the hospital, and the things they didn’t do that led to me getting infected with Ebola. But that didn’t happen and I felt I was left with no choice but to turn to the courts for help,” said Pham.
