Apple vs. Android

Technology has become the world’s biggest topic. From laptops, tablets, and E-readers to Wi-Fi, google, and television, electronics are a huge part of our world. However, the biggest and most useful advancement in technology is the cell phone. Everywhere you go, you walk past people texting, calling, Snapchatting, Tweeting and more.

A huge discussion and rivalry in today’s technological world is the constant battle between Apple and Android. They are the leading operating systems for cell phones. Apple and Android are always competing to manufacture the next big thing. Even students have strong opinions on their preferable cell phone companies.

After interviewing eighteen high school students of all ages, I discovered that around 61% of those students own an iPhone, 22% own an Android, and 16% have a different type of cell phone or no cell phone.

Recently, CNN money compared 15 common features of an iPhone 6 to a typical Android phone. Android won the contest for eight features, while the iPhone 6s took seven. On TechRadar’s Top 10 Smartphones in the US list, the Samsung Galaxy S6 was placed at number one. On the comScore website, they revealed that 54.4% of Americans use Android, while 46.6% use Apple cell phones.

That makes us wonder: Why are teens more likely to use Apple when so many websites claim that Android is better and more advanced? Out of those eighteen students, eleven prefer Apple, four prefer Android, while two have no preference. When I asked them why, none seemed to have any solid reasoning about their preference. In fact, most of the students said the exact same thing. Maddie Fiber, “Apple is just easier to use and less complicated than Android.”

Avery Garza, a freshman told me that, “In today’s society with social media and new apps and music constantly being released, Apple has the best access to new media. Plus, everyone has iPhones.” Tyler Roberts said, “iPhone 8 mini, I am calling it now”.

The question that still remains is: What will happen next? It’s impossible to tell when technology is updated so quickly. Who knows? Maybe Apple sales will drop, maybe Android will take over the world. Anything is possible.
