American gun store forced to pay $6 million because of “straw buyer” sale

A gun store in the US was ordered to pay nearly six million dollars to two police officers seriously injured by a gun illegally purchased there.

The gun was said to be purchased back in 2009. Since then over 500 crimes have been traced to the store.

Teenager Julius Burton attacked the two officers, Bryan Norberg and Graham Kunisch, after they stopped him while he was riding his bike. Burton’s bullets shattered eight of Norberg’s teeth, ripped through his cheek and stopped in his shoulder. Kunisch was shot multiple times, losing an eye and part of his frontal lobe, forcing him to retire.

Burton acquired the firearm by paying another man, a so called “straw buyer”, to get him the Taurus .40-caliber handgun in West Milwaukee.

Norberg and Kunisch sued Badger Guns, the store that sold the gun, for negligence. Store owner Adam Allan’s lawyers claimed that he had been deceived, not negligent, but the jury still ruled in favor of the officers. They ordered that the store pay Norberg $1.5M, Kunisch $3.6M and $730,000 in damage fees.
