Executive Order on gun control

Obama’s fight for gun control continues with his most recent executive order which focuses on expanding requirements needed in order to possess firearms in attempt to mitigate gun violence in the US.

Federal government currently requires businesses who sell guns to have a federal firearms license however that does not apply to private transfers.

The license requires businesses to perform background checks on buyers but in personal transactions, background checks are not mandatory which is what the order is aimed at.

Supporters suggest by leaving personal transfers out, individuals who would not be able to attain firearms from a business because they would not be able to pass a background check are able to come into the possession of them.

With congress continuously denying the law to extend to private transfers Obama’s order is in place as an attempt to bypass a gridlocked congress. The order also includes the banning of high powered guns, high capacity magazines, armor-piercing ammunition, federal funding for gun violence research and stricter requirements for reporting lost or stolen guns to authorities.
