Beyoncé: Has she gone too far?

Beyoncé: Has she gone too far?

On February 6th, the day before this year’s Super Bowl, Beyoncé released her new song “Formation” along with a video. The following day Beyoncé performed the song during the halftime show alongside Coldplay and Bruno Mars. After the conclusion of the performance, an advertisement announced Beyoncé’s Formation World Tour. Within a 48 hour period, “Formation” was known worldwide.

The song addresses Hurricane Katrina, white supremacy, feminism, black pride, The Black Panthers and police brutality towards African Americans. Many see her work as yet another fierce work from beloved Bey, but others are offended, saying the video is rooted in hatred.

The “Formation” video contains many powerful images, most notably a little African American boy in a hoodie in front of a line of policemen in riot gear. After that scene, a graffiti message on a wall reading “Stop Shooting Us” was shown. Critics are claiming that the messages aren’t progressive, but simply anti-police. Police departments across the country are encouraging boycotts for the concerts during her world tour. Some are also refusing to work at her events. The tour kicks off in April in Miami, and the Miami P.D. are encouraging fans to not show up and police officers not to work.

The criticism fired at Beyoncé is nothing compared to the support she has gained from her newest release. Fans have given Beyoncé an unfathomable amount of support on social media on Twitter and Instagram. There have been protests at the NFL headquarters in New York. They are claiming that police forces are simply bullying Beyoncé for uncovering what many see as the truth. The controversy appears to hasten ticket sales. She has sold over $100 million in ticket sales.

Beyoncé’s tour will also be a source of charity. Profits will be used to fundraise and donate to multiple charities in Flint, Michigan to help deal with their water crisis in addition to the aid funding she has already been doing. Beyoncé and her husband, Jay-Z, have also donated over $1.5 million to the Black Lives Matter movement along with other social justice foundations. It appears the boycott for Beyoncé is failing, and sensitive issues are now open to discussion among the common people.
