Waking Up to the Sound of Music

Phoenix Symphony Director Equips DV Chamber Orchestra with Confidence and Technique

Last week, Phoenix Symphony Director Tito Munoz visited the Desert Vista Chamber Orchestra during zero-hour to give his insight about their music making to prepare them for the 70th annual Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference, which takes place in Chicago during the spring, as well as their concert on November 1st (which features all Midwest Festival repertoire).

“The experience was especially insightful because it was a fresh perspective, and he was able to point out things that we had never thought of anticipating” said Senior Tyler Ruan. “He has worked with composers before so he was able to offer unique and valuable advice.”

During his visit, Munoz exercised techniques intensively so that the young musicians would reach perfection at the festival. From a variety of dynamics, bow pressure, bow speed, movement, articulation, blending, and emphasizing rhythms, all of the students obtained individual knowledge and skill from this once-in-a-lifetime-experience to work with such a skilled conductor.

“Because he’s so meticulous and detailed with the music, our orchestra had to really listen to each other

and be picky with the music so we could perform in a way that would capture our audience,” said sophomore Alexis Kim. “I love the music! They’re a wide range from smooth and peaceful to powerful and choppy, but each one is so enjoyable.”

As an passionate and skilled violinist, Munoz provided many fruitful principles and techniques for the advanced 24-student orchestra.

“I am very blessed to have students who allow me to challenge them to perform better every time they play.  I want my students to work for continual growth as musicians,” said DV guitar and orchestra director Darlington Wedington-Clark . “We have the potential of having the finest program in Arizona again this year. I am very excited for the possibilities.”
