Can Desert Vista students take a challenge?

Desert Vista’s challenge day was held on Tuesday October 25 in the gym. DV students had a chance to become closer with their classmates and learn about important social issues and how they can fix them. This all happened in one fun packed day.

“This was my second time participating in Challenge Day” says senior Savannah Sampson “This was an eye opening experience for me, I got to see my classmates in a whole new way and i now feel so much closer with my classmates.”

100 Desert Vista students spent most of their school day locked in the gym. They had challenge day leaders there to help them take a step out of their comfort zones. After that they were able to open up and participate in different activities and games. That helped them get a better understanding for modern day issues such as bullying, violence, stereotyping and other social issues. After everyone had gotten a good understanding they were able to express their opinions on them and how they would take a stand against those issues.

“Even when dealing with serious subjects they found a way to deliver in a manner that was upbeat and supportive” says Ms. Susan Slavin “It was very supportive and respectful of people’s backgrounds, feelings, and demographics.”

This years Challenge Day was a huge success. The Challenge Day leaders loved our group and were amazed by our school’s ability to open up and how respectful they were . The students learned a lot and are ready to tackle whatever issues they may face.

“Walking out, i feel like i have a new family. A family that I can relate to and feel comfortable with” says Ms. Slavin.
