Relay For Life

The Relay For Life is is a community-based team event. The focus of this event is all about cancer. The event will be held on March 26th and March 27th from 12-8 pm. Whether cancer has affected a family member, a friend, or even yourself this event is all about showing awareness. The amount of participation shows that many people are or have been affected by this.

This event has much to offer during the time spent there.  There is an opening celebration, a survivors lap, a caregivers lap, a luminaria ceremony, and the closing ceremony. At the very beginning of the event they celebrate everyone who’s has been affected by cancer. The Survivors Lap is  when survivors from cancer talk about how it was for them to have it and inspire those with cancer. The survivors are the first ones to start walking to show their strength, and they are honored by taking the very first steps of the event.

The Caregivers Laps are for the people that take care of those affected with cancer. This part of the event is to honor the caregivers for everything that they have done.  The luminaria ceremony is to represent the loved ones that were lost to cancer. This is the time during the event when people have the opportunity to grieve, and for others to show love and comfort. The closing ceremony is the final part of the night. The closing ceremony is where they will thank everyone that came and look back on everything they have achieved.

The Relay For Life has affected many lives and has touched many people’s hearts. “I know many people with cancer, many don’t realize how many people are affected so deeply by this until we look back at it” says Rylie Appelt. This event is to show that we honor both those who are living with cancer, as well as those who have been affected by cancer as well.
