Importance of Earth Day

Desert Vista’s yoga teacher, Ms. Goe is celebrating Earth Day by holding a DV Frock Swap. If a student has gently used clothes that look great and are in good condition, then they can turn them into the yoga room, which is room E-130 or the girls’ locker room (see Coach Goe) for the Frock Swap during lunch Friday, April 21. The items that are not swapped, will go to a free resource for middle and high school teens from the Tempe and Kyrene school districts called, Threadz; a center that carries a wide selection of new and/or gently-used items at no charge.

“I think that not enough people know about the harmful effects that their actions have on the environment and Earth Day provides and spreads information of the effects of a person’s actions; overall improving and conserving the environment,” said freshman Kaarina Makela.

Participating in Earth Day could help prevent future harm to the environment; every little action put towards saving the environment from chemicals, will end up going a long way in preserving the earth. Every piece of new clothing not made sufficiently or with quality, further contributes to damaging the environment due to the multitude of chemicals and dyes, all of which can be detrimental to the earth, air, groundwater, and people.

“I think that Earth Day is good because it brings awareness to the problems of the environment and the earth life, because some people are unaware about things that are happening around them,” said yoga student Rebekah Teasley. “Some children will never know about animals becoming extinct and earth day helps draw attention to it and help animals out.”
