Male vs. female pay

In the world we live in today, the gender pay gap is becoming more and more evident each day. Many cases like actor Jennifer Lawrence’s pay gap comparing to her male coworkers are becoming prevalent. But why the pay gap?

Many people resort to a rather obvious answer: women have less education or can get pregnant and have to take a break to take care of children. That is not always the case; reports show that, with the highest degree, a professional degree was where the pay gap was the most apparent. Females over the age of 25 are only earning $66,055 to a male’s $100,00 salary for the same degree.

As for the children, the average women takes about a 12-week leave before returning back to work. That is a significant amount of time to take off, but should they lose a job or get reduced pay for something that should be celebrated? The New York Times did a study and concluded that women who had children earned 7% less per child than a mother with no kids. The mother with more kids has more mouths to feed and bodies to clothe, so shouldn’t they be paid more?

As we grow as a society, you would expect the gap to decrease. It seems like the opposite; more and more information is coming out about the unnecessary pay gaps. And it is not just lower-level workers; many companies do not believe in female CEOs. It was found that the top two paid male CEOs made more than all of the top ten paid female CEOs combined. Also, the tenth highest paid male CEO would rank up as number two in the women’s rankings.
