How important is learning a foreign language?

As high school students are looking into colleges and ultimately their futures, the question of what classes to take springs up countless times. AP classes look better on a transcript but allow for little social activity, while regular classes are easier and can still be sufficient for many universities.

Students sometimes are unsure of what to do for their elective courses, but there is a subject that pleases colleges, is offered at all levels of difficulty, and is enjoyed by students: foreign language.

Spanish, French, German and Latin are all offered at Desert Vista High School, so there are plenty of options. Although foreign language is not a graduation requirement for DV, it is recommended for many in-state and out-of-state colleges and universities. Additionally, knowing a foreign language can only be beneficial down the road. Spanish, French and German are widely used across the globe and it can only help to be sufficiently fluent in one of them. Latin may be a dead language, but anyone interested in studying medicine would benefit from learning the Latin roots and phrases.

There are countless ways why students should exploit the opportunity to learn a foreign language, and high school is the perfect time to do it. It completes an elective credit for high school, and through Rio Salado, it can even complete college credits. If students take enough foreign language classes during high school, they can have a portion, if not all, of their college foreign language requirements met by the time they finish high school. This can give students the option of minoring in a foreign language during college.

Overall, students should consider the option of taking foreign language in high school. It is extremely beneficial and will only help students now and later in their lives.
