Teacher Tenure?

Teacher Tenure?

Teacher tenure, a policy that restricts administration from firing teachers and requiring a just case, such as severe misconduct and incompetence, making it incredibly difficult to fire these teachers.  Which comes the question, should tenure in the field of education be allowed?

This policy requires a “just case”.  This process is extremely intensive, as well as expensive, therefore, the school resides to keeping the teacher in question rather than going through the excruciating process of firing that teacher.

Teachers with tenure, prevents teachers from getting fired for things that do not relate with education.  Before the introduction to tenure, teachers would often get fired if a new political party came in, or if a principal wanted to hire his or her friends.  With tenure it eliminated discrimination or favoritism, but what about teachers with tenure that are slacking off?

Most states in the US require about three years of teaching before tenure kicks in.  So after three years on the job a teacher becomes almost untouchable, as long as they do not get in any serious trouble they can keep their job.  Teachers will not have anything to worry about since they will not get fired so this ensures that they will have an easy time not teaching to their full potential.

Many people have become outraged at the fact that their kids are not getting a solid education from teachers that may have experience, but are not willing to put in extra effort to really help a child succeed.  After all, that is an important part of being a teacher.
