Politics in the classroom

After the election of the new president, many debatable topics have been on the rise and a lot of people want to express their opinions. Although, as students we are swayed away from this specific topic. Why are politics not discussed in classrooms?

Politics are avoided in classrooms for multiple reasons; people would say politics are a sensitive topic and they can cause many problems in and out of classrooms. But the benefits to talking about them can be tremendous.

When students talk about politics they can learn about each political party and what they stand for. About 53% of Americans don’t know the political party of their representative. That is a large number of people who don’t know something that should be considered very important. This number could be lowered if, as high school students, we learned this basic stuff.

Students can also learn about why politics matter. Students should be able to go into the world and be able to know what they want in this country.

“I think the more knowledgeable we are and the more we discuss politics in a useful way, the next generation can improve our politics as a country,” said Raquel Perez, a retired Detroit Police officer, concerned about the future of America’s voters.

The future of our country is extremely important. Everyone should be involved in the country’s political affairs, not matter what age you are.
