Chomp, Chomp, Chomp

Should students be allowed to eat during class is a question that many teachers and students feel differently about. Some teachers let students eat to their heart’s desire, while some strictly don’t allow any food or drink, besides for water.

I asked students and teachers from Desert Vista High School if they think students should be allowed to eat during class. Mr. Banach, the journalism teacher, said that he does not think students should be able to eat in class because they are too irresponsible and make too big of a mess. He says that if they have a medical condition of which they have to be able to eat whenever they need then of course that’s an exception, but otherwise, no.

All the students I asked thought otherwise, although for different reasons. Karly Makay, a freshman at DV, thinks students should be allowed to eat during class.

“Yes because during the day students can lose focus and get tired throughout class, and food is energy for the body and the brain!” She believes students should be able to eat because it will help academically.

Simone Chavez, a freshman, agrees with Karly, but explained how students are rushed in the morning and might not have time to eat at all, which is dangerous to their health, plus many students can get low blood sugar from not eating or not eating enough, which is dangerous too.

Lydia Bych, a freshman, agrees, but only if the students are eating healthy foods. Since they need to eat for their overall well-being, they also should be held to a standard of eating healthy food, otherwise there isn’t a point of letting students eat.
Overall, a general conclusion is that students should be allowed to eat healthy food in class if it is necessary for them to do so for health conditions, low blood sugar, energy, or because they didn’t have time to eat. However, they should be respectful by not making a mess, otherwise they should lose their eating privileges.
