Desert Vista High School has many sports throughout the seasons, but some of the most prestigious sports come in spring and winter. The biggest are basketball, track and baseball. Among them is also soccer and wrestling in the winter and softball, tennis and boys volleyball in the spring.

In baseball, Coach Luketich has lofty goals for this season. Having been in three state championship games and claiming two, he’s hungry for another one. Last season, the team lost in the first round of the state tournament and are back this year working to get better.

“We get better, enjoy playing and make a run at state title,” said Luketich.

In boys’ basketball, Coach Antonio Darden is looking to lead the #2 team in the state to a title. With in-district rival Corona del Sol being ranked number one in the state, they face a tough hurdle along the way. The 19-1 Thunder, whose only loss thus far is to Loyola Academy from Illinois, have dominated throughout the season and, according to Coach Darden plan to “extend our season as far as we can.” They are looking for their second state championship with Darden, though the last one was while he was an assistant coach.

For girls’ basketball, Coach Will Gray leads the third-ranked team in the state. At 18-3, the Thunder have been doing great this year. With Sabrina Haines leading the offense, averaging 16.7 points per game and with a team-high of 3.6 assists per game, the Thunder is looking at a great year, and possibly a run at a second straight state title.

For track, Coach Cassandra Cline heads a massive program that won the national title in 2007 and three state championships. They are looking at another spectacular season after pulling up in second for state. Among the many track events, long distance is looking to be a standout due to their state titles in boys and girls cross-country this fall. This spring, they look to dominate and bring home a title for the Thunder.

With all of these sports going on, many of them prestigious, the Thunder are looking at winning more than a few state championships for the winter and spring seasons.
