NFL 2014-15 Recap

NFL 2014-15 Recap

The NFL season started with a bang as the Miami Dolphins upset the New England Patriots 33-20 in a shocking game that had many wondering what was in store for the rest of the year. The Philadelphia Eagles and their high-flying offense overcame a 17-0 halftime deficit to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Dallas Cowboys lost their first game, putting the future of head coach Jason Garrett in question for yet another season. A Patriots loss had people saying that it was time for Tom Brady to retire.

Week two had the New York Giants losing their second straight game. The Cowboys stepped it up and won their first game, lighting a fire under them that eventually led to them going on a tear, winning seven straight games, including a highly-anticipated match against the defending champion Seattle Seahawks. After their win, the Dallas Cowboys moved up to number one on the power rankings and many wondered if the mere mediocre Seattle team could repeat what they had accomplished a year prior.

After week seven, the highly-anticipated rookie Johnny Manziel of the Cleveland Browns was still not starting, and the Giants lost their star wideout Victor Cruz to a knee injury in a game against their division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, where they were blown out 27-0. Then, three weeks later in a game against the Cowboys, Giants rookie Wide Receiver Odell Beckham Jr. made the catch of the year on a play early in the second half. Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning had thrown the ball deep towards the right sideline and Beckham, whose left arm was being held by Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr, leaped backwards and extended his right arm out as far as he could. The ball came down into his pointer and middle finger along with his thumb, and he instantly tucked the ball into his body as he fell into the end zone. Beckham’s would go on to have nine straight games with more than 90 receiving yards, tying an NFL record once held by Michael Irvin.

The Cowboys, after this game, lost to the Arizona Cardinals, who, with their 9-2 record, were the NFL’s top team at that point. However, this victorious stretch would come to a screeching halt as the Cardinals would end up losing their division to a surging Seattle Seahawks team in a thrilling end of the year week that saw Johnny Manziel finally coming in and Andrew Luck at the top of the league.

In the first round of the playoffs, the highly-touted Cardinals were defeated by the Carolina Panthers, and the Detroit Lions lost to the Cowboys. The Panthers would go on to the divisional round where they would lose to the eventual NFC champion Seattle Seahawks. In the championship round, the Patriots blew out the Indianapolis Colts 45-7 and the Seattle Seahawks pulled off the greatest comeback of the year. Trailing 19-7 with five minutes to go, they quickly scored a touchdown and then recovered an onside kick that led to another touchdown. Then, after a successful two-point conversion by Seattle, Green Bay kicked a field goal and tied the game. Seattle then pulled off the win in overtime on a beautiful connection between quarterback Russell Wilson and wide receiver Jermaine Kearse.

After the championship, the next biggest event was the Pro Bowl Draft. In this festive event, two Hall of Famers, in this case Cris Carter and Michael Irvin, would draft a team from the NFL’s current Pro Bowl nominees. Carter picked Andrew Luck first and Irvin picked Tony Romo. Then, in a shocking turn of events, Irvin selected Odell Beckham Jr. with his next pick. The rookie’s face at the sound of his name completely described the feeling you got from watching this season. The rookie made two fantastic catches in the Pro Bowl to help Michael Irvin’s team get the win.

So, with the Super Bowl approaching, who will be 2014-2015’s champion?
