NBA trades changing franchises

Without question, the middle of February has been crazy for the NBA.

It all began with the Minnesota Timberwolves trading guards Mo Williams and Troy Daniels to the Charlotte Hornets for a draft pick and guard Gary Neal. Less than a week later, the New York Knicks waived Amare Stoudemire, and created some cap room for themselves. The Dallas Mavericks signed Stoudemire just two days after he was waived.

The day after that was the deadline for all trades. A total of 39 players and seven first round draft picks were traded, which made February 19 one of the busiest deadline days in history.

The most active teams were the Phoenix Suns and the Philadelphia 76ers. The Suns did very well, though they lost guards Goran Dragic and Isaiah Thomas, the former to the Miami Heat and the latter to the Boston Celtics. In return, they received a total of three first round picks and Milwaukee Bucks star, Brandon Knight.

The team with the best day was the Oklahoma City Thunder. They found a way to add all around, gaining young center Enes Kanter of the Utah Jazz and D.J. Augustin of the Pistons. They managed to also lose minimal talent in center Kendrick Perkins and point guard Reggie Jackson, along with a first round pick.

Another team that did well was the Heat. They received Goran Dragic from the Suns and got rid of some small role players, such as Norris Cole. They did lose two first round draft picks and didn’t manage to pull any other major players. Though Dragic, who is thought to be a good fit for the Heat, is not too bad of a haul for them.

The Utah Jazz also had a successful final day of trading. They scored a solid center in Kendrick Perkins and two draft picks in a deal with the Pistons and the Thunder.

The Portland Trailblazers gained a great sixth man in Arron Afflalo from the Denver Nuggets, where he had been one of their stars next to Kenneth Faried. Afflalo is going to be key for the Blazers if they want to go deep into the playoffs this season, because they needed more depth on their roster, and they managed to do that without losing any important players, just a draft pick and three lower players.

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Brooklyn Nets may have made the most surprising trade of the day. Brooklyn traded veteran Kevin Garnett for the Wolves’ Thaddeus Young, which shocked many people because Garnett played the first twelve seasons of his career in Minnesota and many thought he would never come back. It was a happy surprise for Wolves fans and beneficial for the Nets, due to the fact that Thaddeus Young is a young, quality player who can lead the dying Nets alongside Deron Williams.

While the trade deadline was crazy, and trades shocked, angered and contented many fans across the nation, it will not be able to match the craziness of the upcoming section of the season, as the effects of the trades set in.
