NFL lacks integrity

There must be something in the water.

Two days ago, Steelers Wide Receiver Martavis Bryant was suspended for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Bryant, who is reported to miss four games for his offense, was extremely productive for the Pittsburg Steelers last season, catching 26 passes in only 10 games for an average of 21 yards per catch. This is yet another devastating blow for the Steelers, who will be without Pro Bowler LeVeon Bell for the first two games of the season after he too violated the league’s substance abuse policy. Both Bryant’s and Bell’s suspensions shed light on the underlying problem in professional football: integrity. Or, lack thereof.

In the 2014 offseason, 28 players were arrested. Among them: Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon, Carolina Panthers Defensive End Greg Hardy, and Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice. The latter two players, Rice and Hardy, were arrested for domestic abuse, while Gordon was arrested for DWI.  A repeat offense has since suspended the Browns wide out until 2016. So, what do Bell, Bryant, Gordon, Hardy, Rice, and all the other arrested players have in common? They’re all coming back, with the exception of Ray Rice. Instead of weeding out the offenders, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and his crew have instead granted these men the opportunity to continue making millions of dollars, despite all they have done. While it may seem harsh to keep these players in the league, the presence of stupid, often violent men not only degrades the quality of the NFL, but puts other players in harms way.

Numerous practice fights have ensued over the past months, with multiple injuries being reported. Most notably, New York Jets Quarterback Geno Smith, who suffered a broken jaw after being punched in the face. Other incidents include the St. Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys Fight, as well as the Browns and Washington Redskins fight.

It seems the NFL’s policies only start issues, never fix them. With numerous other incidents like the case of Adrian Peterson, indicted on child abuse, and Tom Brady, cheating, further show that the integrity of the NFL is severely lacking. Either the NFL needs to get rid of Goodell, or get rid of these players. Or both.
