Anquan Boldin wins Walter Payton Award

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Anquan Boldin accepted the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award at the 2016 National Football League award ceremony. The Walter Payton Man of the Year Award is given to a player to acknowledge charity and volunteer work around one’s community. Boldin created a foundation, Q81 to give underprivileged children both education and opportunities outside of school such as extra curricular activities. That is not the only thing the Anquan Boldin Foundation does to help others. Boldin raises money to provide meals, run food drives and gives scholarships. For each graduating class, four $10,000 scholarships are given. Boldin founded his foundation in 2004 and took a pledge of 1 million dollars to expand the foundation. Throughout the years, Boldin has been with many different teams in the NFL such as the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens and now the San Francisco 49ers. The foundation holds charity events and activities in Phoenix, South Florida, Baltimore and San Francisco. Not only was the award given for the charity work done for others, but the amount of hard work and dedication put into the sport to become the best of the best.Along with Boldin, there were 31 other nominees up for this award. Players from Patrick Peterson, cornerback of the Arizona Cardinals to Ryan Kerrigan, linebacker of the Washington Redskins. During Boldin’s acceptance speech he said, “I’m beyond humbled to be selected as the Walter Payton Man of the Year. I used to dream that I could play like Walter Payton when I was growing up, but he became even more of an inspiration to me as I learned about his legacy as a humanitarian.”
