The latest ESPN 30 for 30 was a documentary on the Chicago Bears team of 1985. The team of ‘85 is thought to be one of the best teams in the National Football League franchise. For the Bears, this year would be something very different as the team welcomed new head coach Mike Ditka and defensive coordinator coach Buddy Ryan. At the time, Ditka was the special teams coach for the Dallas Cowboys. Ditka was a former linebacker for the Bears. The players in the year of ‘85 are ones that have gone down in history such as Walter Payton, Mike Singletary, William Perry, Jim McMahon, etc. For those who do not know them by their real name may know them by their nicknames. Walter Payton as Sweetness, Mike Singletary as Pumpkinhead and William Perry as the Refrigerator. The documentary was how the team made their way to Super Bowl XX, the only Chicago Bears team to win a Super Bowl title. The Bears played the New England Patriots and won with a score of 46-10. Maybe the way the Bears got to the Super Bowl was their famous 46 defense. The 46 defense was created by coach Buddy Ryan, there were six players lined up along the line of scrimmage. Four of the six players used defensive line technique and the other two, one lined up on the outside used linebacker technique. This defense was named the 46 defense after safety Doug Plank whose jersey number was 46. With the help of an outstanding offense and a running back that has gone down in the hall of fame, the Bears were unstoppable. Now, these players and coaches have grown old to look back on what an amazing season they had together as they have gone down in history.
