March Madness

March Madness

March Madness, one of the biggest NCAA basketball in season tournaments. Hence the name, this tournament is held throughout the month of March. A total of 68 teams come into this tournament from colleges all across the country. Not only does the tournament get a lot of the attention, but so do the brackets. Each year, people all across the U.S. fill out brackets before the tournament predicting which teams will win what game. Money, prizes, gifts, etc are usually part of who wins or has the perfect bracket. According to FiveThirtyEight, the chances of having a perfect bracket is 1 in 1,610,543,269. The biggest upsets have taken place in the March Madness tournament. In 1991, number fifteen seed Richmond upset number two seed Syracuse 73-69. Lehigh upset number two seed Duke in the 2012 March Madness Tournament 75-70. The Duke Blue Devils won the tournament last year. Another thing special to this tournament is the Cinderella teams. A Cinderella team is a team that exceeds the what fans, predictors and spectators think of the team. In 2010, Butler, a small Indianapolis college made a name for themselves.  Although the team came into the tournament ranked number five, it was not easy to keep up with the top seeded teams. Butler made it all the way to the championships to face Duke, but fell to them within the last seconds.

The 2016 bracket has finally made its debut. Kansas is ranked at number one in the South section of the bracket, Oregon at number one in the West section, North Carolina at number one in the East section and Virginia at number one in the Midwest section. Official March Madness play began on Thursday, March 17th.
