Novak Djokovic quits during semi-final

The number one male tennis player in the world, Novak Djokovic quit the Dubai Championship. Djokovic dropped his first match 6-3 to opponent Feliciano Lopez. Not only did he drop the set, but he ended his streak of seventeen final wins. After calling the doctor out onto the court to checkout his eye, he refused the eyedrops. In nine games, Djokovic made eighteen errors due to having an eye infection in both eyes. According to Channel NewsAsia, Djokovic said: “Physically I feel fine. I’m really sad to end the tournament this way, but I was forced to.” The last time Djokovic retired from a match was in 2011 at the Davis Cup. Since retiring from the Davis Cup in 2011, Djokovic has gone on a 312-38 record. Earning his 700th win the other day, Djokovic was booed as he was walking off the court. This year, it was his first loss of 15matches. Lopez, Djokovic’s opponent, had not noticed Djokovic’s problem with his eyes until they had both met up at the net to shake hands. During his press conference, Djokovic wore sunglasses to help ease the pain on his eyes.

Currently, Djokovic is playing in the BNP Men’s Open which is a men’s singles tournament without any trouble from his eyes. Seeded at number one, Djokovic played American Bjorn Fratangelo. Djokovic won two of three sets 6-1 and 6-2. The third round will be held on March 15th against Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber who is seeded number 27.
