Sadie’s Saturday

Once a year, a dance called Sadie’s happens on a Saturday night in January. It’s different than homecoming and other dances, because it is supposed to be a girls ask guys dance. This dance tends to be smaller than other dances, so I asked two freshman girls, Karly Makay and Ava Gentry, and a freshman boy, John Perkins, who have never been to a Sadie’s dance before why or why not they were going.

Karly is going, while both Ava and John will not be attending. Ava said that she isn’t going because she will be having a sleepover with her friends instead. John isn’t going because he doesn’t want to and wasn’t asked. Karly is going because she likes being in student council and next year she will be in student council again and they plan Sadie’s, so she would like to be at one before she plans it. She also said she likes to “go out and do stuff in public.”

Karly, John, and Ava all like the idea of Sadie’s, but only Karly likes the theme, which is Great Gatsby. The Great Gatsby is a 1920’s movie, and implies that the dance would be very extravagant in 1920’s style because the main character in the movie, Gatsby, is very rich and over the top extravagant.  “I like the theme because I think it’s pretty original and a good theme to decorate for,” according to Karly. Ava in contrast doesn’t like it because “it’s so dumb.”

Ava and John both said they wouldn’t go unless they had a date, but Karly is going this year without a date and with a group of her friends. In the future, Ava hopes the theme is more romantic and relatable. “I think the spirit days and getting the word out could be utilized better,” said Karly. They all said they would attend in the future, with the exception of Karly saying she wants to see what it’s like on Saturday before she decides.
For Sadie’s to become more popular, people need to be more aware and participate in the spirit week before the dance, vote for the theme, and ask a date. Sadie’s needs to be a highly anticipated, more well-known dance around the Desert Vista campus.
