Is Less Better than More?

High school students face a fair amount of difficulties, they have to deal with things such as  friends, extracurricular activities, and a personal life, I believe the last thing they need is hours of homework.

How beneficial is homework really? In a study conducted by an educational psychologist at a Sydney University by the name of Richard Walker, showed that the amount of time spent on homework had a negative effect on the test scores. So how much is hours of homework really worth if it does not improve test scores?

Homework can collide with many aspects of a student’s life. They can miss out on spending time with family and friends, they can miss out on social events, and cuts into sport and practice time  which can in turn help them with their future.

Homework can take away a student’s motivation. Think about it, if a student has six sets of half hour homework to do, they are most likely not going to try their best. They want to get the work over and done with and move on to the next. It doesn’t help the student with testing because they don’t learn anything if they don’t try.

Yes, there are many reasons we should have homework. Homework provides a great practice platform for many subject that require practice, it can also keep troubled students from causing more trouble. The issue is that the amount of homework given is ridiculous, hours of homework is not needed, it’s simply busy work. It would advantage students to have less homework so they can enjoy themselves.
