Urban Legends

Urban legends are something that have been around for generations, stories that kids tell around the campfire while they pretend not to be completely terrified. Some of the more popular legends include Bigfoot and Bloody Mary, but some of the other classic urban legends are unexplored by most of the country.

Lillian Grey – Salt Lake City, Utah

Lillian “Lilly” Gray is a resident of the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Born June 6th, 1881 (a date that is often debated), she died on November 14, 1958. It is not her death itself that is of interest to those who come across her final resting place, but the inscription underneath her name. It reads, “Lilly E Gray Victim of the Beast 666”. No one is sure why either Lillian or someone else wanted that written on her gravestone, but the inscription has led people to believe that there is really a monster lurking in the shadows of Salt Lake City.

Bob Mackey’s – Wilder, Kentucky

Known as one of the gates of hell, Bob Mackey’s Music World has had many reportings of supernatural experiences, and even a visitor being attacked by a ‘demon’ back in 2009. The building itself has a dark history, with some claiming that murder and other violent acts may have happened in the past. The nightclub has been featured on many shows where psychics try to come and communicate to whatever took home inside the club.

Annabelle – Monroe, Connecticut

Annabelle’s story eventually made it to the big screen in 2014, but to some people it remains unknown that the doll actually resides in Monroe, Connecticut to this day. The story begins in 1970, where young medical student Donna received the Raggedy Ann doll from her mother for her 28th birthday. Soon after, Donna’s roommate would start to notice subtle changes with the doll, from it shifting positions to switching locations in a room. After a few weeks, the doll would be found in different parts of the house, sometimes with written notes next it it saying “help us” or “help Lou.” Their friend Lou had hated the doll, but had been having severe nightmares about the doll climbing on him and scratching him, while he would wake up with claw marks on his legs and arms. The roommate finally brought in a psychic, who claimed that long before the apartment complex was built, a young girl named Annabelle had died in the field where the complex now was. When the doll was brought into the house, the spirit latched onto it. After several exorcisms, priests and several psychics confirmed that it was not a spirit, but a demon. The doll was soon locked up in a wooden box with a cross and sign that reads “WARNING, POSITIVELY DO NOT OPEN.” Annabelle resides in the Warren Occult Museum to this day.

The Green Man – Pennsylvania

This legend was actually based off a real man by the name of Raymond Robinson. The story goes that if you found yourself on the Koppel-New Galilee Road in Pennsylvania during the night, it was likely that you would see the Green Man. The Green Man had no face and a light green aura around his body. The actual man, Raymond Robinson, lost most of his face during an electrical accident when he as a kid, and used to wander the back roads of Pennsylvania during the night; he didn’t come out during the day for fear of causing mass hysteria.

The Body in the Bed – Unknown

Not only is this story actually true, but it’s happened many times across the country. The story starts with a newlywed couple checking into a luxurious suite for their honeymoon. They smell something weird in the room, but decide to ignore it. A few days go by and the smell becomes unbearable. Room service comes and cleans the entire room, including removing the mattress. The maid it terrified to find a decaying body underneath the mattress, shoved into the box-spring. This recorded incident has happened five times since 2006.
