Fall is here, and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. A time of giving thanks, fabulous food, and family all around. How much do you know about Thanksgiving?
Fun facts about early Thanksgiving:
- The pilgrims were the first to celebrate it
- The first celebration lasted three days
- The pilgrims had no forks, but instead ate with spoons, knives, and fingers
- Benjamin Franklin wanted to make the turkey the national bird
- In 1953, someone over-estimated how many turkeys they would sell by 26 tons. The extras were sliced and frozen in different packaging, making the first TV dinners

- In the United states alone, about 280 million turkeys are sold for Thanksgiving
- Californians are the largest consumers of turkey
- In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October
- According to Roto-Rooter, the Nation’s largest plumbing service, Black Friday is the busiest day of the year for plumbers
- Only male turkeys, known as toms, gobble. Females, or hens, prefer to cackle
- The poor turkeys being born… a turkey younger than 12 weeks is called a fryer turkey
