On April 25, a brutal earthquake in Nepal killed over 1,900 people, destroying a majority of the country’s capital, Kathmandu.

It was reported 1,931 deaths occurred in Kathmandu and the surrounding valley, and more than 4,700 people had been injured. But the earthquake affected more than just Nepal. It set off a catastrophic string of events around the eastern hemisphere. The quake set off  avalanches around Mount Everest, where at least 17 climbers died. At least 34 deaths occurred in northern India as a result and buildings reportedly swayed in Tibet and Bangladesh.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8 and struck shortly before noon. People ran into the streets to avoid being crushed by falling buildings. Large rips and tears also went through the ground, swallowing things such a motorcycles and small cars.

“Our country is in a moment of crisis and we will require tremendous support and aid,” said Broadcasting Minister Minendra Rijal on Indian television.
